ohana means family at ohana poke co.
while i was sad to see black hogg go, i'm so so so excited for ohana poke co, which just took over half the space (the other is still the soppressata sandwich shop). why? i'm currently obsessed with poke. i've been running out to pasadena anytime i get the craving, or even making it at home, but ohana is really the first one on the east side! plus, they have a beer and wine license; what's not to love?
as with most other poke places, you get to choose size (regular, large) and your base (white or brown rice, kale) and then your poke and your side. the pokes are all tuna based and pre-made (with one octopus and one tofu option), but you can do a 50-50 split on those as well as your sides. i ended up getting a large ohana shoyu with white rice, seaweed salad and additional masago. one thing i really like is how they don't layer the poke! most places, the rice is on the bottom, and poke on top. here, they kind of give you wedges of each bit, so a wedge of rice, a wedge of poke and a wedge of your side, all topped with scallions, edamame, wasabi peas and furikake. it made getting a little bit of everything much easier, and you're not left with lots of rice and no poke at the end. also, it was delicious! i'm really interested in trying the octopus next time.
they also have spam musubi! it was significantly larger than i was expecting, and SO. GOOD. you can't really see it, but there is also a shiso leaf layered in there. definitely a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.
