pig roast! at the hungry cat.
the hungry cat's santa monica location was doing a special pig roast for father's day that not only had whole roasted pig and a wonderfully southern twist on their normal seafood menu (think po'boys, fried green tomates and cornbread), but was also offering beer and bourbon tastings. southern food, seafood and bourbon? if you know me and james at all, you know we couldn't turn this down.
we arrived an entire hour early for our reservation (better safe than sorry with the PCH), so we took a seat at the bar and ordered some drinks and a dozen oysters. you may have already noticed in the short life of this blog, we love oysters! we've been to the hollywood location many times, but this was our first at santa monica canyon. it's large and sunny and lovely.
once we were seated, james ordered the $20 bourbon tasting - four 1-oz pours! unfortunately, i didn't write down what they were. according to james, they were a good selection and there were a couple in there he hadn't had before. the rest of the meal was delightful. the roast pig was definitely a standout, as was the grilled corn, and corn pudding!
fried green tomatoes with burrata cheese, radish, avocado, basil pistou.
mexican "street" corn with lime, cilantro, queso fresco and chili salt.
whole roasted pig with pickled watermelon slaw, corn bread and bbq sauce.
grilled blue prawns with corn pudding, pickled chard, roasted summer squash and green romesco.
soft shell crab po' boy with bacon, cabbage, tomato, spicy remoulade and french fries.
