camelia, dtla.

the bar.
august 2024
camelia may very well be my favorite meal in LA from 2024. i’d already been mourning the loss of classic french bistro bicyclette from earlier in the year, but am grateful to now have a japanese french bistro. the food is so delicious and so comforting. and the space is absolutely stunning.
dining room.
highball: suntory toki whisky, rinquinquin peche aperitif, shiso, absinthe, seltzer; decibel martini: daiyame 25 shochu, suntory haku vodka, french vermouths, umeshu, lychee, maraschino, absinthe, orange bitters.
black sesame parker house rolls, salted french butter.
uni otoro toast, tare, shiso, crem fraiche, fresh wasabi.
celebrity tomatoes, burrata, shiso, ponzu jelly.
cocktails were on point. the black sesame rolls were to. die. for. the burrata with ponzu jelly was insane. the spaghetti bolognese managed to be a standout in a meal of standouts. even the side of kombu rice. this food speaks to my soul. i keep looking for reasons to go back and am sad most weeks when it really just doesn’t work out in our favor for one reason or another. one of these days..
spaghetti bolognese a la japonaise.
croque madame of ham katsu, gruyere, mornay sauce, estevan’s shokupan, frisee.
scallops & blue prawns, chanterelle mushrooms, blush tomatoes, tarragon, brown butter vinaigrette, carrot puree.
kombu rice, garlic butter, shiso, nori.
