eating and drinking in cape town, south africa.

april 2024

the final cape town post! of course, for some great dinner spots, check out the posts on fyn and the potluck club, and if you’re looking for a moody, hidden speakeasy, the art of duplicity is the place. as usual, visiting a new city also means finding cute coffee shops, casual fare, and eating and drinking at random times when your blood sugar drops.

coffee shops

the general store

22 bree street, cape town

this gem of a coffee shop was actually our first stop after the drive in from the cape winelands and getting checked into our hotel. they have lots of lunch-y goods, but we just came for a pick-me-up. the flat whites were excellent and served in the cutest ceramics and we had a brownie (not pictured) that i couldn’t stop talking about for the rest of the trip.

rosetta coffee

101 bree street, cape town

for our tour of the cape peninsula, we met our guide at this coffee shop first to kick things off over a flat white.

truth coffee roasting

36 buitenkant street, cape town

not only did truth coffee serve the best flat white of our trip, they also had the best croissant i’ve had in a long time (honestly better than any in LA right now). it was so good, flaky and served slightly warmed, i ended up getting two. the industrial space is also very cool and very large, but i man, i still think about that croissant.

a perfect flat white and a perfect croissant.

mochi mochi

71 buitengracht street, cape town

more a tea shop than coffee shop, mochi mochi was an afternoon pick-me-up we stumbled upon. it was very kawaii and we had freshly brewed teas and a tasty red bean bun.

the dorp hotel

273 longmarket street, cape town

we don’t usually eat at our hotels, but the salon was too beautiful and plant- and light-filled to completely ignore. plus, their breakfast buffet was too good and too pretty to pass up entirely.

kalky’s

the harbour, kalk bay

we love a good fish & chips and kalky’s delivered. there’s something about a good fish shack right on the harbour, you know?

alright, we’re definitely getting into miscellaneous territory now, but here are some one-off highlights.. i absolutely recommend getting a beer at the top of table mountain. there were a couple places you could buy a cold one and then find a quiet place to sit and just take in the view and ever-moving cloudscape.

we were starving and my blood sugar was dropping while walking around the very-touristy V&A waterfront. luckily for us, that means there are places to eat. we decided to go with a classic hot dog from a stand called the hot dog king. it was exactly what we needed.

black sheep restaurant

104 kloof street, cape town

lastly, we had a great, great meal at black sheep. it was a bustling, neighborhood restaurant with the best vibes, a great wine list and a giant menu where everything looked (and tasted) delicious. if it was just us, i would have a lot more and better photos, but we met up with my college friend keith (who made so many recommendations for this trip) so we simply had the best time and i wasn’t focused on taking pictures.
