hi!

i love to eat and travel and document as much of it as i can.

eating and drinking in jeju, south korea.

eating and drinking in jeju, south korea.

april 2023

this is my last post about south korea! it was such an amazing trip and we really ate so well throughout. jeju was interesting food-wise in that we were staying at a resort (which we rarely ever do) and either road-tripping around the island or relaxing at the hotel. we had one nice dinner resy going into it, but it was cancelled on us day-of due to unforseen circumstances.

mornings

badabara bakery

2822-12 saekdal-dong, seogwipo-si

blah blah

badabara interior.

jeju sweet potato bread.

badabara is a cute little bakery in the resort complex (there were many resorts near each other) that i kept going back to because their pastries were so good. the purple sweet potatoes you see above are really a mochi bread made to look like a sweet potato, but it did also have a jeju sweet potato filling. i think i had 4 of them during our trip. they also had the best croissant we had the entire time in south korea. the only reason i didn’t think it was perfect was because it had a light drizzle of honey on it and i prefer mine plain.

capp and croissants with a view at badabara.

it is also right at the top of cliffs with stunning views of the seas.

flott (now: irony ivory) at parnas hotel

100 jungmungwangwang-ro 72beon-gil, seogwipo

flott interior.

our hotel has a really cute brunch space on the property where we stopped in one morning for flat whites and some sustenance before heading to the spa.

greek yogurt, seasonal fruit, granola; flat whites.

spinach omelet, stir fried mushrooms.

starbucks

32 jungmungwangwant-ro 110beon-gil, seogwipo-si

we didn’t actually go here (other than to take photos), but it’s hard to miss! this starbucks stands out with it’s creepy, black and white design. it’s attached to some kind of media art center called grimm forest, so it seems like they did a takeover of the exterior.

afternoons

jamae guksu

46 honggollam-gil, jeju-si

i had seen irene yoo of @yooeating go to this spot while i was planning for the trip, and it looked delicious so we had to go!

friendly dol hareubang at jamae guksu.

gogi guksu (jeju pork noodle soup).

boiled pork dumplings.

afternoon tea at parnas hotel

on hotel had a gorgeous atrium that served afternoon tea, and it was a really good one.

the tea set.

basalt scones.

instead of the traditional tower, we got a jewelry box with two levels, with the upper level being savory, and the lower being sweet.

jeju canola with cold pasta.

salmon tartare, jeju mandarin dressing.

jeju scampi macaroon.

3 color hwajeon, jeju pheasant starch syrup.

green tea diamant, cherry mousse, cherry blossom tea cake, green barley creme brulee, buckwheat mousse, karahyang tart.

we also did our very best to chill by the pool but it was not nearly warm enough and very windy. it was pretty short lived, but we still did it (and have photos to prove it!).

obviously driving around the island we had to stop in some convenience stores for a pick-me-up every once in awhile. they have pouches of iced coffee or tea drinks.. and freezers of pre-filled cups of ice! it’s super wasteful, but we had to try it having seen it many times during our trip.

and obviously i had many convenience store onigiri on this trip. it’s one of my favorite things about asian convenience stores!

haenyeo seafood at seongsan ilchulbong

in my last post, i mentioned the haenyeo serving their fresh-caught seafood at seongsan ichulbong. well, we ordered some! i think i ordered a conch and an abalone - it’s served with some raw onions/peppers, seaweed and a spicy dipping sauce. so good!

evenings

the buffet at parnas hotel

we never do buffets. but the dinner i had booked for our anniversary cancelled just a few hours before our reservation so we just went with it. that being said, the buffet was very good and had a huge variety of dishes and cuisines to choose from. the following are each of my plates..

a pez (now: terreno) at parnas hotel

another of our nights at the hotel, we went to their basque restaurant, a pez.

acorn fed iberico pork ham.

anchovy, pitted olive, guindilla pepper.

pickled mussels with smoked paprika, white wine.

braised beef cheek.

we ordered almost entirely off the tapas menu and everything was excellent, though the conch was a favorite.

conch, manchego cheese herb butter.

seasonal jeju fish, thyme, garlic, dried pepper oil.

south bounder

33 yerae-ro, seogwipo

as usual, we sought out a local brewery and ended up at south bounder. it was a quiet night when we went, but the beers and the food were both great.

house burger.

buttermilk fried chicken.

sammi black pig jungmun branch

2275-1 saekdal-dong, seogwipo-si

and of course, we had to do jeju black pork korean bbq at some point.

jeju hallabong makgeolli.

jeju black pork.

more drinks back at parnas

last but not least, we stopped by the hotel bar a couple times to get some drinks.

last drinks in jeju!

crazy to be wrapping up our south korea travels with this post! after this we went on to okinawa and then taipei. looking forward to sharing the rest.
