snapshots from copenhagen, denmark.
march/april 2022
back in march of 2020, we were supposed to fly to prague and make our way through central europe and culminate in copenhagen. when we started planning for 2022, we decided to not stick to the same itinerary but be open to other options.. except for copenhagen. it was my non-negotiable. not only because of a particular dinner reservation, but because it’s been my #1 bucket list city for awhile now. we spent four nights there and i absolutely loved it.
we stayed close to nyhavn, the postcard-famous waterfront of colorful houses. we were able to walk most places we wanted to see from home base, but we did do a LOT of walking.
while we were there, the weather was kind of all over the place! from overcast to heavy rain/snow mix and then even beautiful, full sunshine.
the city has such a wonderful aesthetic. interesting buildings with interesting architecture, old and new. so much public art and sculpture, some of which was rather dark or tongue-in-cheek. bridges and canals everywhere, cute flower shops and bicycles galore.
to get a better view of the city, especially the parts that were too far to walk, we took a boat tour that went through the canals and harbor. i would highly recommend it. the boats are custom built to make it through some of the very small bridge openings, and you get some great views of buildings and neighborhoods you wouldn’t otherwise see.
i really wanted to go to the design museum of denmark but it was temporarily closed (either for the pandemic or renovations or both). instead we went to the round tower, which was fun to walk up the curving sloped floors to the top and get some good views of the city. it was built in the 1600s as an observatory so there was some really interesting artifacts to see in addition to the building and the views.
some of the other buildings we enjoyed walking around were the black diamond (a library and exhibition space), the train station, the glyptotek (wonderful art museum with a stunning atrium).
the royal danish ballet was performing while we were in town so i had to get tickets! it was inside the old royal theatre, which was absolutely gorgeous in gold and velvet. when we sat down we pointed at the fancy booth across from us and joke that that must be where the queen sits.. and then the queen and her sister showed up. everyone stood up and everything, and didn’t sit back down until they were seated.
we had such a lovely time in denmark, but i truly fell in love with copenhagen as a food city and can’t wait to share all the things we ate (and it was a lot) while we were there!
