you know you're in for a treat when you see someone expertly making corn tortillas by hand! our first visit to cacao mexicatessen in eagle rock did not disappoint. we went really not knowing what to expect and were delighted to find a long wait, an extensive taco menu, amazing mission fig mole, wines from baja, and even a jonathan gold sighting.
mission fig mole fries: house made fries topped with mission fig mole poblano sauce and sesame seeds.
tacos carne asada, chorizo rojo con huevo and cochinita pibil.
we stuck with the mole fries and tacos. everything is made to order, so we basically finished all of the fries before any of the tacos arrived. no worries though, because they were amazing. the duck carnitas was out of this world and definitely the highlight of the meal, but all of it was fresh, tasty and of the best quality.
taco carnitas de pato: duck confit, avocado, vinegar onion, radishes, chile oil.
taco sea urchin chile guero: tempura battered and fried chile guero filled with shrimp and green onion on a bed of tres quesos, topped with serrano soy salsa, wasabi aioli and fresh sea urchin.
taco cangrejo de mexicali: batter fried soft shell crab on a bed of cucumber, topped with avocado, serrano chiles, tobiko, green onion and wasabi aioli.
