road trip through the scottish highlands.
after spending just one day in edinburgh (and eating as much as we could), we grabbed a rental car and headed north toward the isle of skye! non-stop it’s a 5-6 hour drive, but it’s also through parts of the beautiful scottish highlands. we gave ourselves an entire day with no real itinerary other than to get there.
on the drive north, we passed through loch lomond & the trossachs national park. including a detour to see a mirrored installation called LookOut that reflected and distorted its beautiful surroundings. it’s pretty, but the one-lane road to get there was a bit intimidating whenever opposing traffic appeared.
i really don’t have much information to provide other than that it was an insanely beautiful drive and the landscape, like the weather, just kept on changing. we stopped a lot to take pictures (and take breaks from all that driving, too!)
similarly, after our time in isle of skye, we had to drive back to edinburgh to catch our flight to london. we drove a slightly different route back, which included a pit stop in the town of fort augustus. it’s on the southern tip of loch ness, so we can say we saw loch ness! no monster sightings unfortunately.
the return drive also put us along the edge of cairngorms national park and some higher elevations and colder weather. our trusty rental car was a vauxhall mokka (don’t worry, we’d never heard of it either), and it got us around scotland without any issues.
